Cybersecurity fundamentals, from Linux to web security

A one-to-one course that starts with the Linux command line, moves through how networks work, and ends with how web applications are attacked and defended. No prior experience needed.

  • First 30-minute class free
  • Live, one-to-one, online
  • Female tutors on request
  • Reply within 24 hours

Who it’s for

  • Beginners curious about how security works
  • Computer Science and IT students who want practical foundations
  • Developers who want to write more secure web applications

Before you start

  • No prior experience needed.
  • A laptop or desktop computer you are allowed to install software on.

Problems we help with

  • Not knowing where to start in a very large field
  • Online tutorials that skip the basics, or teach tools without the ideas behind them
  • Uncertainty about what is legal to practise on

Ethical, authorised practice only

Practise only on systems you own or have written permission to test. Testing a system without permission is against the law in Pakistan and most other countries, and we never teach it.

Topics covered

  • 1. Linux fundamentals

    • The command line and the file system
    • Users, groups and file permissions
    • Processes, services and logs
    • Shell scripting basics
  • 2. Networking basics

    • IP addresses, ports and protocols
    • TCP, UDP, DNS and HTTP
    • Reading traffic with packet analysis tools
    • Firewalls and basic network defence
  • 3. Web application security

    • How browsers, servers and cookies work together
    • Common vulnerabilities, such as injection and cross-site scripting
    • Authentication and session security
    • Secure coding practices and fixing what you find

How lessons work

  1. Concepts, then hands-on

Each topic is explained first, then practised on the command line or in a browser, on systems you are allowed to test.

  2. Ethics from the first lesson

You learn what is legal and responsible to test, and how real security professionals work with permission.

  3. A path, not a pile of tools

Topics build on each other in a fixed order, so each new tool makes sense when you meet it.

What you’ll be able to do

  • Work confidently on the Linux command line
  • Explain how data moves across a network, and read basic traffic
  • Recognise common web vulnerabilities and how to prevent them
  • Know the legal and ethical limits of security testing

These are the aims of the lessons. Progress depends on the student’s starting point and practice, and we never promise grades or results.
