About this subject

Tajweed is the set of rules for pronouncing the Quran: where each letter is produced, how letters affect each other, how long sounds are held and where to stop. This subject teaches the rules and, more importantly, applies them in the learner's own recitation.

Tajweed is about pronunciation. It assumes the learner can already read the text, and it does not teach memorization or meaning.

Focus
Pronunciation (Tajweed)Pronouncing each letter from its correct point of articulation and applying the rules of recitation.
How it differs from other subjects
Tajweed is about correct pronunciation. Reading fluency, memorization, translation and interpretation are separate subjects.

Who it may suit

Children, teenagers and adults who already read the Quran and want to recite it correctly, from first rules to refining recitation.

  • Learners who already read the Quran from the page and want to recite it correctly
  • Teenagers and adults who want to understand the rules, not only hear corrections
  • Children who read fluently and are ready for the rules explained at their level
  • Learners preparing for Hifz who want their recitation correct from the start

Learning objectives

These are goals to work towards, not promises. Progress depends on the learner’s starting point, age and regular practice, and we do not set a fixed timeframe.

How lessons may be structured

Lesson length, the number of classes a week and the pace are agreed with you before lessons begin.

  1. Rule, then recitation

Each rule is explained briefly and then practised in real passages, so it is used in reading rather than memorised as theory.

  2. Listening closely

The tutor models the sound, the learner recites, and the tutor points to the exact letter that needs work.

  3. Steady refinement

Learners keep reciting passages they know while new rules are added, so earlier corrections are not lost.

  • Quran Reading Basics

Reading the Quran from the page, fluently and correctly, once the letters and marks are known.

  • Hifz-e-Quran

Memorizing the Quran, or chosen surahs, with regular revision.

  • Noorani Qaida

Arabic letters, their sounds and vowel marks: the first step to reading the Quran.

Frequently asked questions

Does “Mastery” mean I will master Tajweed in a set time?

No. The name describes what the subject works towards. How far a learner gets, and how quickly, depends on their starting point and regular practice. We do not promise mastery or a fixed timeframe.

Can I start Tajweed if I still read slowly?

Tajweed assumes the learner can read the text. If reading is still slow or uncertain, Quran Reading Basics is usually the better start, and Tajweed can follow.

See Quran Reading Basics

Is it theory or recitation?

Both, with the weight on recitation. Each rule is explained briefly and then practised in the learner's own reading.

Which recitation is taught?

Please ask when you enquire. We confirm the recitation (qira'ah) the tutor teaches before lessons begin.
