About this subject

Tafseer is the explanation of the Quran. Where translation gives the meaning of the words, Tafseer looks at context, themes and how passages connect, drawing on established classical and contemporary works of tafseer.

Lessons explain what these works say rather than offering the tutor's own interpretation. Tafseer is not memorization or recitation practice, and it does not replace asking a qualified scholar about religious rulings.

Usually comes after

Explanation from established sources, not rulings

Lessons explain what established works of tafseer say. They are not the tutor's own interpretation, and the tutor does not issue religious rulings (fatwas). Questions about religious practice should be taken to a qualified scholar.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the themes and structure of selected surahs
  • Know the context in which passages are explained
  • See how passages connect within a surah
  • Know what a work of tafseer is and how it is used

These are goals to work towards, not promises. Progress depends on the learner’s starting point, age and regular practice, and we do not set a fixed timeframe.

Topics covered

An outline, not a fixed syllabus. What is covered, and in what order, is planned around the learner.

  • Studying a surah

    • Overview and main themes
    • Passage-by-passage explanation
    • Connections between passages
  • About tafseer

    • What tafseer is, and how it differs from translation
    • Well-known works of tafseer and how they are used
    • Key Arabic words that shape the meaning

How lessons may be structured

Lesson length, the number of classes a week and the pace are agreed with you before lessons begin.

  1. Established sources

Explanations come from established works of tafseer. The tutor makes clear what a source says, and does not add personal rulings.

  2. Surah by surah

Learners choose surahs to study, often ones they recite regularly, and work through them passage by passage.

  3. Reflection and questions

Each lesson leaves time for questions. Questions about religious practice are referred to a qualified scholar.

  • Quran Translation

What the words and passages of the Quran mean, using published translations.

  • Seerah

The life of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, in order.

  • Arabic Language

Arabic as a language: vocabulary, grammar, reading and speaking.

Lessons draw on established, widely used works of tafseer. Tell us if you have a preference; we confirm the sources the tutor uses before lessons begin.

Can the tutor answer questions about rulings?

Tafseer lessons explain the meaning of the Quran as given in established works. They are not a place for religious rulings; for those, please ask a qualified scholar.

Do I need to study Quran Translation first?

Not always, but knowing the basic meaning of a surah makes its tafseer easier to follow, so many learners start with Quran Translation.
